Background screening

The process through which an organization or individual verifies a person’s identity and background by reviewing both public and private sources to confirm details such as employment history, education, criminal record, and other pertinent activities. This process is commonly used by employers to assess potential candidates before making hiring decisions.

Breath alcohol drug testing (BAT)

A quick, non-invasive test that measures the amount of alcohol in a person’s breath.

Clearinghouse Consortium / TPA (third-party administrator)

A third-party administrator that manages a company’s DOT (Department of Transportation) drug and alcohol testing program, including maintaining required testing records and ensuring compliance with DOT regulations, often by pooling multiple employers into a “consortium” to manage random testing selections together; essentially, they handle the administrative tasks related to drug and alcohol testing for employers, particularly those with commercial drivers, by utilizing the CDL Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse database to report violations and manage driver records. 

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) testing

Viral test that looks for a current COVID-19 infection. They use respiratory samples, such as a swab from inside your nose or saliva from your mouth, to determine if you are currently infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) paternity testing (legal)

A legal process that uses a person’s DNA to scientifically establish whether an individual is the biological father of a child, typically used in court cases involving child support, custody disputes, or inheritance issues, where the results are admissible as evidence due to strict sample collection and chain of custody procedures.

Drug testing – court-ordered

A legal requirement that requires individuals to submit to drug or alcohol testing to prove they are drug-free. The purpose of these tests is to ensure compliance with the law and to keep communities safe.

Drug testing – Department of Transportation (DOT)

A five-panel drug screen administered to employees in safety-sensitive positions who are employed by companies regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Drug testing – hair follicle

Involve removing a small hair sample for laboratory testing. Results can show if a person has been using certain drugs or prescription medications in the previous 3 months. It can detect cannabis, amphetamines, and more.

Drug testing – oral fluid

aka saliva drug testing, is a non-invasive test that screens for drugs using a person’s saliva. It can detect recent drug use, including amphetamines, opiates, cocaine, and more.

Drug testing – rapid

aka instant drug testing, is a test that can quickly determine if someone has recently used drugs or alcohol. Rapid drug tests can be used in a variety of settings, including workplaces, correctional facilities, and health and human services programs.

Drug testing – regular, non-DOT

A drug screening that is not regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Non-DOT drug tests are used by employers to check for drugs in their employees’ systems.

Early gender testing

A reliable, non-invasive test that can be done as early as 9 weeks into a pregnancy. NIPT analyzes the fetal DNA in the mother’s blood.

Fingernail testing

A drug and alcohol test, a test to detect a two-way mirror, or a test to determine if a gourd is ripe.

Fingerprinting

A recording of an individual’s fingerprints for various uses.

Flu testing

A medical procedure that detects the presence of the flu virus in a respiratory sample.

Labwork

aka laboratory tests, are medical procedures that analyze samples of blood, urine, or other bodily fluids for health information. Doctors use lab work to diagnose conditions, monitor treatments, and assess a patient’s overall health.

Notary services

Services provided by a notary public, an official who witnesses and verifies the signing of documents. Notaries are appointed by the state government to help prevent fraud and ensure that the signer’s actions are voluntary.

Phlebotomy services

Blood draws performed by a medical professional to collect blood samples for testing. Phlebotomy can also be used to treat certain blood conditions.

Pregnancy testing

Measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood or urine. HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

Strep testing

A procedure that determines if a sore throat is caused by group A streptococcus bacteria, also known as strep bacteria. It can be performed using a rapid strep test or a throat culture.
